The Olympic Stadium 2012

London 2012

Torchbearer: Stephen Brooks

Published 6 June 2012

Stephen Brooks, a resource assistant in the library at our Falmer campus, was chosen to carry the Olympic torch through Lancing on its way to the London 2012 Games.

Stephen was chosen after being nominated by his wife who wrote about his resilience and good humour in the face of ill health. Between kidney dialysis treatments, he continued to run pub quizzes and give stand-up comedy routines. Following a successful kidney transplant, when his wife was pregnant with their son, Steve was diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma in his eye. He has since lost his eye to a second tumour but is now cancer-free.

Stephen said: “Since everything went official I’ve had contacts from organisations such as eye cancer groups and kidney charities, and this has made me realise that by taking part in the torch relay I can, in some very small way, help fellow patients.”

Stephen carried the torch on 16 July 2012.
