Shopping

  • Sale bagDo I really need it?
    • Will I use it?
  • Can I afford it?
    • Is it worth it?
  • Can I get it cheaper elsewhere?

The first question is always whether you need something or just want it. Try waiting a week or two before you buy anything and shop around for the best deal you can get.

Shopping tips

  • Try to buy clothes and presents in the end of season sales.
  • Do your research – especially when making a large purchase.
  • Ask other students about the cheapest local shops and markets.
  • Keep receipts and guarantees in case things go wrong.
  • Check with shops to see if your NUS card gets you a student discount.
  • You may be able to buy second-hand course books from other students on your course.
  • Check out charity shops for good quality bargains and create your own unique look.
  • Sell unwanted items on eBay or Gumtree.
  • Recycle clothes with friends.
  • Check out Traid: www.traid.org.uk especially when there’s a £1 sale on.
  • Have a rummage at a boot fair.
  • Remember internet shopping can also be cheaper. Buying used things online can save you money:
  • Always invest in a good quality coat, footwear and a bag for university.
  • Use vouchers when you go shopping. www.myvouchercodes.co.uk got a good collection of vouchers and online codes.

Think about opportunity cost – If you buy something in the sales, reduced from £200 to £75 it's a fantastic bargain but a waste of money if you only wear it twice.
