National Student
Money Week

During the week commencing Monday 7th March the University of Brighton Student Advice Team participated in the first National Student Money Week.

As part of the event we had information stands at university sites in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, and Student Advisers were present to discuss funding, budgeting and money management with students and staff, as well as giving away freebies donated by Consumer Financial Education Body (CFEB) www.cfebuk.org.uk We also had several competitions and an online money related opinion poll for students to enter.

We would like to thank everyone who visited our stands, entered the competitions and completed our online poll.  Hopefully you found the information and advice helpful.  There were loads of entries for our Top Tips competition and you had some fantastic suggestions for ways of saving money, so choosing a winner and four runners up was not easy. The winning entries were chosen by a panel of representatives from regional universities and CFEB.  For a list of all the top tip entries, including the winning entries (in bold) click here

For the Money Matters Money Quiz, the lucky winner was picked at random from the correct entries and will receive a UBSU hoody. As for our online opinion poll, over 2,000 people responded which is amazing, and an article drawing together the responses will feature in the next edition of the Verse, so keep an eye out for that!

Last but not least, this is a reminder that all full-time students are required to apply for their funding for each year of their course.  Therefore, if you are returning to your studies in September 2011 and have not already done so, you should apply for your funding as soon as possible, and definitely no later than the 30th June deadline if you want to ensure you receive your money at the start of the next academic year.   You can either do this by logging on to your Student Finance England account at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance  and applying online, or by calling 0845 300 50 90 to request a paper application form ( PR1) and returning the completed form and evidence to:

We can help check applications, and there will be form filling sessions at the main sites so watch out for ‘student finance’ blogs on Community
