Fair play for everyone in school sport

11.11.2003

A new book edited by Sid Hayes and Gary Stidder from the University of Brighton's Chelsea School guides PE professionals in the increasingly important areas of equity and social inclusion.

Equity and Inclusion in PE and Sport is a collection of chapters written by past and present staff at the Chelsea School. Each chapter is based upon current sociological theory related to social inclusion, and challenges stereotypical views in PE whether arising from race, gender, social class, sexuality, ability or disability.

The book examines and questions the extent to which the revised National Curriculum for PE (NCPE 2000) in England encompasses the wide range of challenges faced by PE teachers today in respect to social inclusion. The statement contained in the NCPE policy document identifies three key principles that are deemed essential to developing a more inclusive curriculum. The book critically evaluates these principles and the expectations and standards derived from them in the context of PE.

Sid and Gary encouraged each author to provide a short biographical account of their own PE experiences as pupils, trainees and teachers. Examples of good practice and pedagogy provide PE specialists with ideas on how to implement an inclusive PE curriculum within the context of their lessons in schools. Practical advice for established professionals, newly qualified teachers, and trainees about how to meet these requirements are also included.

Contributors from the Chelsea School include Andy Theodoulides, Gill Lines, Fiona Smith, John Sugden, Ian McDonald, James Wallis and Marc Keech, with a foreword by Professor Alan Tomlinson.
