First UK Sports Journalism degree kicks off in Eastbourne

21.11.2003

Experts from the worlds of sport and media will be visiting the University of Brighton’s Chelsea School in Eastbourne to kick off the new Sports Journalism degree course. The Sports Journalism Inaugural Lecture is on Friday 28 November, 5.30pm at the University of Brighton, Denton Road, Eastbourne.

The BA is the first of its kind in Britain and it's popularity and potential has already been confirmed by doubling student numbers for the next academic year.

It represents a unique programme of study which is able to blend a critical sociological awareness of the key issues in sport and society with vocationally relevant training that meets the needs of new students and the industry.

Students will learn a variety of on-the-job skills through training sessions straight from a dedicated newsroom and will be supported through work placements with local, regional and national sport media outlets.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) certificate in newspaper and magazine journalism syllabus lies at the core of the degree and will be taught by specialists.

Peter Salmon (Director of BBC Sport), David Bedford (Race Director, The London Marathon) and broadcast journalist Mark Saggers (BBC Radio Five Live) will speak on themes reflecting their life in sport and the media. This will be followed by a panel discussion with leading academics and practitioners.

Professor John Sugden, leader of the new Sports Journalism course said,

"What a great line up of distinguished speakers to launch this new course. It's an indication that the linking of university education and sport journalism training is being taken very seriously by some of the country's most high profile and experienced sports journalists and sports personalities."

The Inaugural Lecture follows a day of activity on sports journalism for the Chelsea School with its hosting of the British Sociological Association (BSA) sociology of sport study group, which is dedicating a day's seminar to the theme.
