Building a brighter future

11.12.2003

University of Brighton architecture students are helping to make Lancing children's dreams come true.

The town's Guinness Trust Estate contacted the university last year to ask if students could work on a project to provide community facilities. They are now ready to present their ideas for a 'youth shelter' to residents, who will be asked to vote for their preferred proposal.

The youth shelter idea has evolved over a year-long consultation process between students and children on the estate. The aim is that students will build the selected design during March 2004.

The estate is home is 87 families and 250 children but has lost most of its community facilities including the local youth club. During consultations the residents' association identified the creation of a multi-functional venue that could be used for recreational and learning activities for adults and children as important.

Andre Viljoen, from the university’s School of Architecture and Design said,

"We’re very excited about the designs which our students and the local children have come up with. It’s been a real partnership project between the university, residents and the Guinness Trust."

Local firm Karis Developments is also supporting the project.
