The all male University of Brighton Kick-Start Dance Company and boys from 10 secondary schools in the region present Beyond the Break, an evening of contemporary dance, at the Gardner Arts Centre on Saturday 24 January.
Schools taking part include those with a national reputation for excellence in boys’ dance as well as ones where former company members now teach and have introduced dance to the curriculum. Contributions will be made from pupils ranging from year seven to GCSE and AS / A Level Dance.

The present company members are all in their final year of a four-year Physical Education initial teacher training degree. The company recognises the importance of the male PE teacher as a significant and potentially influential role model with the power to impact on equality of access and opportunity for boys.
The company seeks to challenge the assumption that participating in, and teaching dance, is a feminine activity. Through a series of accessible performances and workshops, the company seeks to create a climate of excitement and enthusiasm for dance and to support teachers of dance.
The Kick-Start Dance Company has received regular critical acclaim for the way in which it confronts gender stereotypes and promotes a positive way for boys to become involved in the arts.
Schools in the region taking part include Ringmer Community College, Patcham High School in Brighton, Priory School in Lewes, The Bishop Bell School and Lindfield School in Eastbourne and Hailsham Community College.
Artistic Director Fiona Smith said,
"Beyond the Break celebrates five years of pioneering work of the all male KICK-START Dance Company and their partnership schools. The night seeks to recognise contemporary dance as part of a broad and balanced dance education and challenge the performers to broaden their horizons and seek inspiration in and from dance.
