More than 800 students will receive their awards from the University of Brighton at its winter ceremony on Friday 13 February.
For the first time the awards ceremony, where students will gain qualifications ranging from diplomas and degrees to doctorates, will be held at the Brighton Dome.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Watson and the Chairman of the Board of Governors Sir Michael Checkland will present the awards. Sir David Watson said,
"Awards ceremonies are very special days for the university. They provide the one occasion on which everything stops and we concentrate on recognising the efforts and celebrating the achievements of everyone who works in and for the university.
"We do this most obviously by applauding the success of those who have achieved degrees and other awards. But we also acknowledge that in some important ways our graduates and diplomates are our representatives. They reflect what we are all striving for."
Lifelong learning rewarded with MBE
Penny Jones – BA (Hons) Professional Education Studies
"The reason that I embarked upon the Professional Educational Studies degree course was that I really wanted to develop professionally and improve my career prospects. My school, Bexhill High, supported and encouraged me to follow this path as they are keen to promote career progression opportunities for staff whenever possible.
"At that point in my career I was the schools Senior Teaching Assistant, and now three years on, having successfully completed my degree and gained a 2:1, I have recently been appointed to the post of Learning Support Manager, a key role in a fully inclusive school.
"I was delighted to hear that I had been awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours list for services to education. I believe the award was given in recognition of the contribution I have made to the development of the role of the Teaching Assistant both locally and nationally, since the Teaching Awards Trust selected me as the National Teaching Assistant of the year in 2002."
Tourism across the continents
Kathrin Gebhardt – BA (Hons) Tourism Management
Kathrin came to study at Brighton from Germany and now lives in Namibia. She had to complete her dissertation while working and it was so successful that her work will soon appear in an academic journal.
She has already secured a job as a tour operator in Namibia and is involved in sustainable tourism development in the country.
Her tutor Marina Novelli said,
"Kathrin did exceptionally well. She had to work while completing her dissertation and adapt fairly quickly in the last stage of her academic life to the Namibian lifestyle after studying in Germany and the UK. She did an excellent empirical work in a remote area of Namibia and achieved a 2:1 grade."
