Going for small business growth at BISME 2004

31.08.2004

Local companies have the chance to find out how working in partnership with the University of Brighton can help grow their business at the 2004 Business Innovation for Small-Medium Sized Enterprises (BISME) forum to be held at the Cinque Ports Hotel, Hastings, East Sussex on 10 September.

The forum, organised by the University of Brighton's Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Centre, is organised around the theme Going for Growth. It will focus on ways to achieve reduced costs, develop new products, expand existing markets, and maximise profits. Structured into keynote sessions, presentations and practical workshops, it will provide opportunities for discussion, debate and networking.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by Kevin Knappett, Head of the DTI Knowledge Transfer Unit, and Terry Nowell, Managing Director of Crawley-based Powerlase Ltd.  There will also be speakers from the University of Brighton, from the Universities of Paisley and Limerick and Liverpool John Moores University, and from TTI Ltd.

Poster presentations will highlight the work of KTP Associates with companies including Optometic Technology Group Ltd, Advanced Biotechnologies Ltd, Aegis Rubber Engineering and Bankside Patterson Ltd.

Dr Bob Howlett, KTP Centre Director said:

"The Business Innovation for SMEs conference will provide an excellent opportunity for companies (particularly small companies) to find out how they can benefit from innovation and strategic improvements to their businesses through working in partnership with the University of Brighton."

BISME 2004 is expected to attract a wide spectrum of SMEs to hear how KTP can fund improvements in their business. They can also meet stakeholders in the knowledge transfer process and participate in workshops offering practical advice on moving their businesses forward.

Notes to editors
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) are about applying academic knowledge for the direct, tangible benefit of business. They provide businesses with access to talented graduates, university expertise and
government funding.

Each Partnership involves a graduate working on a project identified as central to the company's future commercial development. The work of the KTP Associate is jointly supervised by business and academic staff.

Up to 60 per cent of the costs of each Knowledge Transfer Partnership, including the KTP Associate's salary, and the academic's time are covered by a government grant
