Geoffrey Hanlon, Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology at the University of Brighton, will give his inaugural lecture 'Bacterial Biofilms: Devices and Diseases' next week.
Professor Hanlon, from the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, will talk about his scientific experience on Thursday, 21 October at 6.30pm at the Westlain House Lecture Theatre on the university's Falmer campus.
The lecture will give examples of indwelling medical devices, particularly catheters and intrauterine contraceptive devices, and highlight the problems caused when these become infected.
Geoff said: "Bacteria growing as biofilms on implanted devices are highly resistant to antibiotics and hence very difficult to treat. My talk will describe what we have learnt about these device-related infections and explain how the use of bacterial viruses might offer hope in the therapy of these infections and address the broader issue of antibiotic resistance."
Professor Hanlon is a qualified pharmacist but has spent his career working on the study of microorganisms. He has been a member of the academic staff at the University of Brighton since 1979.
