'All the Lonely People' - inaugural lecture

02.11.2004

Ivor Goodson, Professor of Learning Theory at the University of Brighton, will give his inaugural lecture 'All the Lonely People: Education and the Search for Private Meaning and Public Purpose' at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Grand Parade campus on 9 November 2004 at 6.30pm.

In his lecture Professor Goodson, from the Education Research Centre in the School of Education, will argue that our society is being aggressively individualised and that, as a result, the search for professional and personal meaning has been transformed.

He will explore the implications of shifting patterns within society and examine the changing meaning of work for caring professions, especially teaching, in the light of information recently gathered in the 5-year Spencer Foundation study of 'Professional Lives', which he directed.

Professor Goodson will argue that society faces a major crisis if, as the evidence shows, more and more professional workers are taking their hearts and minds away from their work into more private domains and pursuits. It amounts to a crisis of public service and one clearly at odds with current government claims about rising standards and levels of professional commitment.
