On Monday, 6 December University of Brighton students of Architecture and pupils from Falmer School's Art Department will unveil their proposals for a new three-dimensional signage system to help people find their way around the school.
Falmer School is now a full service 'extended' school. In this role it aims to become a resource for the wider community, supporting the needs of a range of age and interest groups. The school already operates a community resource centre called 'The Bridge' as well as a crèche.
The school buildings are widely dispersed over an extensive area of grounds so navigation can be difficult, especially for newcomers to the school.
The University of Brighton/Falmer School Art Link Project set out to overcome these difficulties by developing an effective, fun-to-use signage system.
The signs developed by the students and pupils show people how to find specific spaces and also reveal the school's qualities.
Some work with light, some with mirrors and others can be 'occupied'.
The Art Link project is one of several collaborative University of Brighton projects run jointly with community groups. It is part of the Community University Partnership programme (www.cupp.org.uk) that promotes and facilitates joint projects between the university and the wider community.
The four signage installations to be displayed on 6 December have been chosen by pupils at Falmer School. The whole school voted for their favourites from a selection of 30 individual proposals.
Falmer School intends to develop a fully functioning signage system based on the proposals exhibited.
