University of Brighton’s 2005 fashion show
Saturday 4 June 9pm
Quad garden, Grand Parade
Tickets £7 from 01273 644099
Discover the next Stella McCartney or Alexander McQueen at this year’s graduate fashion show at the University of Brighton, Grand Parade.
Top London catwalk models will showcase cutting-edge fashion by the next generation of fashion and textile designers. The university’s emerging talents include, Ellie Thomas, Rachele Simms and Emma Sandam-King.
Ellie’s collection of women’s evening wear (pictured right) uses luxurious fabrics such as silk which is draped, layered and manipulated into beautiful tailored designs. Ellie, who completed placements at Sense Worldwide, an innovative London-based research outfit, Preen London, a cutting edge fashion house and John Rocha said: "It was a great experience to see clothes that I helped design actually appear in the shops."
She added: "The course at Brighton has a fantastic atmosphere, the tutors and class mates are really supportive and friendly. The course was incredibly intense – it tested me to my creative limits and allowed me to express myself. In the future I want to do something creative in the industry such as working for a fashion house or costume department for a film company."
Rachele, who completed a placement in Finland said: "My trip to Scandinavia had an incredible influence on my work. The grey landscape interrupted by small pockets of intense colour inspired the deconstructed designs, which blend men and women’s wear. Charity shop fabrics combined with crisp white cotton and handcrafting complete the left-of-centre, oversized outfits."
Emma, who is a finalist in the prestigious Student Fashion Awards, said: "My collection is eclectic and inspired by objectives that I’ve collected over the years from flea markets, precious items and handcrafted garments which evoke memories."
The fashion show is a launch pad for many graduates into the fashion industry. Style minded consumer and trade visitors are equally sold on the event, which provides an ideal opportunity to gauge future trends, recruit students and commission or buy work from new designers before they become household names.
"Our students work extremely hard on this event and its shows," said course leader Jake Leith.
"Our fashion show doesn't just cater to students and families, but draws some of the area's top designers and clothing company representatives who come here to have a fun, exciting night and to scout for the new talent of the future."
Tickets are required for the fashion show and can be obtained from the graduate shows hotline on 01273 644099. Last year the university’s fashion show drew a sell-out crowd so advance booking is advised.
