Knitting is enjoying a revival with celebrities such as Geri Halliwell, Uma Thurman and Russell Crowe converting to the pastime. To celebrate its renewed interest, the University of Brighton is hosting the Big-Knit-In on Sunday 5 June, from 12-6pm, at Grand Parade.
The event is free with needles and yarns provided, although regular knitters may prefer to bring their own. It is an opportunity for people to try knitting for the first time, to re-learn the craft or for skilled knitters to swap stories and techniques.
Experienced knitters including the university’s Knitted Textile Design graduates, who specialise in knitting and knitwear design, will be on hand to help out and offer advice.
There will be a bar and BBQ in the gardens, music and performances by the graduates and entertainment for all the family. Work from the degree programmes in Fashion and Design will also be on display.
The Big-Knit-In, which is sponsored by Rowan Yarns, Pony Needles, the British Hand Knitting Federation and Designer Yarns and supported by local business Laughinghens.com, is the brainchild of Vikki Haffenden. She said:
"The main focus of the day is encouraging as many people as possible to knit in a relaxed and sociable environment. Share your skills and learn some new ones, compare yarns, needles and enjoy yourself."
