Burt, Brill & Cardens solicitors give students cash prizes

07.06.2005

Major sponsors of the final year work at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Burt Brill & Cardens have awarded cash prizes for the best work displayed this week at the University of Brighton graduate show.

The firm's managing partner, David Edwards said; "Each year we award about ten prizes to the top students. The prizes are public recognition of their achievement, and help the students with their future careers, as well as providing a welcome financial boost for them."

The solicitors' selection is made with help by tutors and faculty staff, and reflects the diversity of talent on show through the week. It is also a useful guide for anyone feeling a little overwhelmed by the many hundreds of pieces of work to look through! The programme so far has included a vibrant Fashion Show in the faculty garden over the weekend. Clothes by Sarah L'Heureux and Lara Sims were highly commended.

However, overall first prize went to Sarah Cockings. Her illustrations include a distinctive face composed of coloured sticking plasters, on show in rear foyer. Second prize was won by Nienke Van Wijks in the photography gallery, for her pictures of children through a two-way mirror.

A third prize is jointly won by Adam Fairweather for his edible, sustainable burger wrappings and coffee bean cups, and he shares the accolade with a digital music installation by Paul Bowyer.

Four other students were highly commended, three coming from this year’s outstanding sculpture department. These included Elizabeth Drysdale for her shoes in the air, and projection onto a spoon. David Wilson, for his contaminated soil samples and website; and Sera Sneddon for dripping water onto a plinth, her machine lung piece and a video projection.

In printmaking, Alex Booker is highly commended for the plate work involving a family and naval influence.

The whole show is at Grand Parade, central Brighton, and free to visit. Open from 10am till 8pm on Wednesday, it closes this week at 4pm on Thursday 9 June.
