The University of Brighton was well represented when Teachers' TV, a new television station which is entirely devoted to the working needs of teachers, recently highlighted innovative methods of teaching PE.
Gary Stidder (pictured right), senior lecturer in physical education,
joined a panel of experts to review Tag Pack, a non-contact version of
rugby, the Amateur Swimming Association's awards scheme and a Kwik Cricket
kit.
The programme featured Year 6 boys and girls from St John's Meads Church of England primary school, in Eastbourne who had a PE lesson with trainee teachers at the university using the Tag Rugby Pack. The lesson was then reviewed by the panel.
Gary commented: "This resource is great for breaking down gender stereotypes because boys actually see what girls can achieve in context. It is a fantastic introduction to rugby and makes the sport accessible to those worried about contact elements."
The television broadcasts training programmes and teaching tips 24 hours a day on satellite TV and make support for teachers more accessible.
Gary said: "Teachers’ TV is very innovative and useful resource for teachers. If children are interested and motivated to learn and engage, and have the chance and encouragement to follow their own interests, then that has got its own rewards."
It also has a dedicated website at www.teachers.tv.
