Research conducted by the University of Brighton to investigate the impact of personal debt on an individual's ability or willingness to work in Hastings and Brighton will be highlighted at a conference on Tuesday 28 June at the University Centre Hastings.
The report, the brainchild of employment charity Tomorrow's People, was carried out by the Health and Social Policy Research Centre at the University of Brighton, against a backdrop of an announcement in June 2004 by the Bank of England that household debt in the UK had reached the £1 trillion mark (1000 X £1 billion).
The surveys findings provide valuable insight into both the role that debt plays in keeping individuals in both Brighton and Hastings benefit-dependent, and the difference that debt advisory and other support services can make to help people to return to work. The report has also established some preliminary findings about the damaging effects of serious debt on health, children's education and social interaction.
Lord Eddie George, who was the Governor of the Bank of England from 1993 - 2003, will be the keynote speaker at a special half-day seminar to explore the findings of a groundbreaking report into household debt and its impact on the jobless of Brighton and Hastings.
Other panellists who will be discussing the findings of the survey at the seminar include Professor Peter Ambrose of the Health and Social Policy Research Centre at the University of Brighton who led the study, the Rev Paul Nicolson, Chair of the poverty action group the Zacchaeus 2000 Trust, and Georgiana de Lussy, Vice President, Hastings and St Leonards Credit Union.
