Student sets sights on Commonwealth Games

19.07.2005

University of Brighton sports science student Tim Bayley (pictured below), has his sights firmly set on the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

Tim BayleyTim, who graduates on 28 July, won the trials for the 800 metres in Manchester last Saturday with a time of 1 min 48.5 seconds. The qualifying time for the Games is 1 min 47 seconds, which puts Tim in pole position for a place in the England team ahead of the next trials in September.

"It was fantastic to win the trials," Tim said: "I'm now working with specialists at the University of Brighton to analyse my stride pattern using computer technology to improve my performance."

"The support that I have received from the university over the past three years has been brilliant and has certainly contributed to my success on the athletics track. I was awarded an Elite Athletes scholarship of £1,000, received physiological tests to identify my weaknesses and I was given advice on nutrition and diet. My tutors also helped me to manage my academic work."

"Having missed out on qualifying for the Olympics, two years ago my target is to be in Melbourne representing my country."

Strength and conditioning coach, at the university, Flo Pietzsch said: "Tim is extremely hard working and a dedicated individual. It's pleasing to see that his hard work has resulted in such success". We all wish him the best of luck for the future and further successes.

Tim, who is coached by John Biggs, husband of Sally Gunnell, Olympic gold medallist, is now considering a number of sports scholarships from American universities.
