04.10.2005

Sue McHugh joins the University of Brighton as its new Director of Finance. Previously Director of Finance and Corporate Services at Eastbourne Borough Council, she succeeds Kirsten Gillingham.

Sue brings to the university an impressive track record of financial management in both private and public sector organisations. A graduate of Exeter University, she began her career in audit and management consultancy with Grant Thornton, Ernst and Young and Touche Ross. She then worked as Deputy Director of Finance for West Kent Health Authority and as Assistant Director of Finance for the London Borough of Islington.

Sue's role at the university will incorporate responsibility for all aspects of the accounting and financial administration, including supervising the implementation of the university's financial policies, directives and procedures.

Sue said she was greatly looking forward to joining the higher education sector. "I know how important universities such as Brighton are to the future success of the economy. I am thrilled to have the chance to help the University of Brighton tackle the funding challenges it faces in today's rapidly changing environment. I look forward to playing my part in ensuring that it remains one of the most successful universities in the UK."

Commenting on Sue's appointment, Vice-Chancellor Julian Crampton said: "Financial viability is essential to underpin the university's continued success. Sue's broad strategic experience will be enormously valuable and we look forward to welcoming her to the university."
