The University of Brighton has received funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for an additional 333 students at the University Centre Hastings (UCH), and to fund a further 625 places as part of the Sussex Lifelong Learning Network. The University of Brighton leads both these innovative initiatives on the part of partners across Sussex.
Professor Julian Crampton, Vice-Chancellor at the university said: "The University of Brighton is committed to widening access into higher education and to attract people from diverse backgrounds. Both these projects will help us to achieve these aims and I'm delighted that we've received extra funding from HEFCE in recognition of our work in this area."
UCH is now bringing university education to Hastings and is a central part of the regeneration scheme, to help local people increase their skills, realise their potential and get better jobs as well as contributing to the local economy. UCH offers more than 40 courses at Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, from Management Studies and Sport and Fitness to Education.
The University of Brighton also leads the three-year, £3 million Sussex-wide Lifelong Learning Network. This project is part of a government initiative to promote vocational and workplace progression into and through higher education. It is one of the first two lifelong learning networks to be funded by HEFCE in the country. The extra places will support new foundation degrees, CPD and masters-level modules across the county in six broad subject areas directly relevant to local skills needs.
The university has also received funding to increase student numbers by 150 at its partner colleges for courses in sport, veterinary nursing and health.
