Professor Julian Crampton, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Brighton, awarded 50 young mathematicians with certificates at a ceremony to mark the completion of eight testing weeks of masterclasses.
Selected from more than 30 local schools, the talented 12- and 13-year-olds
had spent their Saturday mornings throughout the autumn term grappling
with tricky but enjoyable tasks. Each session featured a different visiting
speaker including for instance Professor Celia Hoyles, Chief Mathematics
Advisor at the DfES and a fresh range of mathematically based activities.
The aim was to have fun, be challenged and learn something new every
week.
Prior to joining Brighton, Julian was Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Liverpool and stressed the links between science and mathematics to the students at the event.
"As a scientist I see maths as a guiding principle in carrying out experiments and in helping us to determine the reliability of results", said Professor Crampton. "The study of maths, and science itself, opens doors to personal fulfilment and great careers."
Sussex maths masterclasses are supported by the Royal Institution of Great Britain and organised by the local branch of the Mathematical Association including Charles Goldie, Professor of Statistics at Sussex. "This group is exceptionally sharp and responsive," he commented, "and receiving their completion certificates from Professor Crampton made the day more memorable for them."
