Student support website launched

20.12.2005

A website outlining the support available to students who are thinking of changing direction in their university career has been launched by the University of Brighton at http://student.brighton.ac.uk/thinkingofleaving.

The website offers practical advice to students who might be thinking about changing their course, transferring to part-time studies or who may even be considering leaving university.

"Students face lots of new experiences when they come to university for the first time," said Head of Student Services at the university, Karen Jackson. "This can be both exciting and daunting - especially if you are living away from home. You may wonder if you have chosen the right course or university, or whether study is right for you at the moment. Many students feel like this, especially in their first term. Most stay and graduate successfully, a few change course and even fewer leave."

Students are advised not to rush into a decision until they have fully considered all the options available and the implications of each. They should seek advice early on, so that they are not struggling alone. For example students who are thinking about changing courses or taking a year out can get advice from the university's team of careers advisors.

The new website highlights some of the things that students need to think about and some of the people who may be able to offer advice. The message to students it that there is help and support available at the university.
