Award winners at the University of Brighton

08.02.2006

Nearly 800 students will receive their awards from the University of Brighton at its winter ceremonies at the Dome on Friday 10 February.

The new graduates will receive their awards, which range from diplomas and doctorates, from the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julian Crampton and the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Sir Michael Checkland.

Professor Crampton said: "Award ceremonies are very special days for the university. These ceremonies are particularly important for me as this will be my first set of graduation ceremonies as the new Vice-Chancellor at the university."

"Universities are about people and it is the students and staff of the university that make these ceremonies possible. For staff, this is an annual event, the high point of the academic year - for graduates, it is the culmination of a great deal of hard work, a rite of passage and a turning point in their lives. I would like to offer all the students best wishes for the future.”

A family affair
A brother and his two sisters will all be graduating this February. Chavarin Suttasuntorn and his sister Chavalee will both be receiving a Masters in hospitality management and their sister Aunyamanee Suttasuntorn will be awarded with an MBA.

Chavarin said: "I really enjoyed the course, living by the sea and studying with people from different backgrounds. We not only leant from our tutors but also from each other."

Chavarin had worked for French chain of hotels ClubMed for 14 years in purchasing but wanted to gain an academic qualification to further his career. He will now be managing a large chain of hotels in the South of Thailand.

Farming a career in the environment
Steve Newman, a mature student and retained fireman has already had a big career change when he swapped a career in PR to run a small organic farm. Now after studying for an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management he has taken up a post in environmental consultancy.

"I chose Brighton because it's a major local university and also the course is very good," Steve explained. "It has also enabled me to get the job that I'm currently doing which is great. I'm advising companies which are looking to develop and expand in order to minimise the impact they make on the environment."

A big event
Jayne Luscombe had been organizing large scale recruitment events for Price Waterhouse Coppers and Watson Wyatt therefore studying for an MA in International Event Management seemed an obvious progression in her career.

"Studying this course was the best decision that I made," enthused Janye "I really enjoyed the course and met so many different people."

Jayne has now joined the university and will be setting up an undergraduate degree in event management.
