Pupils from Mile Oak Primary School will judge designs for a community shelter designed by architecture students from the University of Brighton on Monday 6 March.
The shelter is primarily designed to encourage pupils to walk to school and will be built adjacent to the school entrance, providing a waiting area for parents and carers bringing and collecting pupils.
Additionally the shelter will enhance the school forecourt and provide a space for advertising school events and displaying pupils work.
The students were given a brief to work with the school and develop proposals for the shelter and these will be displayed using models, drawings and interactive video installations at the School of Architecture and Design.
Andre Viljoen, Undergraduate Subject Leader for Architecture, who is running the project with colleagues Katrin Bohn and Nick Hayhurst said: "The project with Mile Oak Primary School is one of several live pieces of work run within the School of Architecture and Design as part of the university's Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP). These projects provide students and community partners with mutual benefits resulting from close collaborative working processes, drawing on the energy and enthusiasm of both sides and opening the resources within the university to a wider public."
Martin Cooper, Deputy Head said "It is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with the university and for the pupils to have a direct input into structural changes that will affect their school. Some of the children have come up with their own designs and it will be interesting to compare these with the ideas of the undergraduates".
If you are interested in this and other community-university projects, there is a CUPP conference 6/7 April 2006.
