Students from the University of Brighton's School of Architecture and Design will exhibit designs for new state of the art cyclestations in Hailsham and Offranville, France (near Dieppe), to create a cross-channel cycle network.
The exhibitions, taking place at the Town House, Market Square, Hailsham, from 18-26 March and La Grange au Moulin, Parc d'Offranville, Offranville, Seine Maritime, France from 1-10 April, will enable local people to give their views on the designs.
The cyclestations could provide services such as refreshments, overnight accommodation, cycle hire and repair facilities, as well as information for tourists, including maps and routes. Both stations will form part of the infrastructure for a 'greenway', providing a traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists and are linked by their location on the Avenue Verte - the London to Paris cycle network.

Design for cyclestation by Jonthan Gale
European Union Interreg funding has been granted to the university to develop design proposals for sustainable cyclestation on the Cuckoo Trail in Hailsham. Like Hailsham, Offranville is planning to develop its disused railway station into the first Avenue Verte / Greenway cyclestation, due to open in 2007. The university is working in partnership with Hailsham Trust and the Commune d'Offranville to consult local people about the designs and proposals for the station.
Students from undergraduate courses in architecture, interior architecture and 3D Design will showcase their proposals and the exhibition will also feature the cyclestation design developed by the architect Steve Johnson, in collaboration with Fourth Door Review.
Project Manager, Jane Penty said: "From a wider perspective, the exhibition introduces the concept of cyclestations as service facilities for all greenway users as a means of encouraging more sustainable forms of transport and leisure, developing rural tourism and encouraging active lifestyles. It also showcases how universities can work in partnership with communities to develop sustainable solutions."
Students will also be awarded prizes for:
- best cyclestations design overall
- best interpretation of programme
- best integration of sustainable issues
- best presentation
- best 3-Dimensional design
Press are invited to the private view on Friday 17 March 2-4pm. For more information contact: Project Manager Jane Penty, Avenue Verte Cyclestations, School of Architecture and Design, University of Brighton, Grand Parade + 44 (0) 7941075354
