It has been a busy few years for Sport and Exercise Science BSc graduate Ragheb Aga (pictured right), who is graduating from the university on Tuesday 27 July 2006. He captained the Kenyan national cricket team and played for the university cricket and hockey first teams which both won the British universities leagues last year.
Ragheb was awarded an Elite Athlete Scholarship by the university and was given £1,000 each year to help cover his sport related expenses. He also had a strength and conditioning coach at the university, Floris Pietzsch, and together they worked on his improving his strength and cardiovascular fitness .
Ragheb said: "I really enjoyed the course and it was extremely beneficial in terms of my cricket. It made me appreciate how the body works, the benefits of exercise, and how fit you need to be to compete in elite sport today. To start with I was really into Psychology as I was interested in how the mind works, but I also enjoyed studying Physiology, understanding the systems involved in making the body work during sport and exercise.
He continued: "I am very grateful to my lecturers and tutors who were very supportive in helping me to balance my sport and study."
Ragheb's course was based at the Eastbourne campus. He said: "I've enjoyed living in Eastbourne. There are loads of sports facilities, and the nightlife for students is good. It's a really nice place to live."
Ragheb is still a member of the Kenyan cricket team and is considering studying for a masters.
