Brighton scores high in student survey

23.08.2006

Students at the University of Brighton studying physical geography have given their course the second highest satisfaction ranking in the country within the subject area.

Figures also show that tourism is ranked in the top five in the country by students in terms of satisfaction and sports science within the top six alongside with Loughborough University.

Seventy nine per cent of University of Brighton students who took part in the National Student Survey gave their courses a rating of 4 out of 5 in terms of satisfaction. Eleven out of the 18 subjects covered scored 4.0 or above, with no courses scoring below 3.6 overall. Compared to last year, most subjects either increased their score for overall satisfaction or remained constant.

The most highly-rated subjects at Brighton were physical geography (4.5), sports science (4.3), with biology, history, medical sciences and pharmacy scoring 4.1, closely followed by tourism, teacher training, and business.

University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julian Crampton said: "This is a strong endorsement of the quality of courses on offer at the University of Brighton and of the student experience here. It illustrates well the appreciation that our students have of the efforts and dedication of their lecturers and staff who work hard to make their time at Brighton both intellectually stimulating and rewarding."

"I am delighted that so many of our students chose to take part in the survey. It gives a clear signal to prospective students that the university's recent graduates are broadly happy with their courses here. Of course there are areas for improvement and we are investing heavily in teaching resources and will use the results of the survey to make further improvements."

The survey covers final year students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and this is the second year that such a survey has been conducted amongst students.
