According to 'The Sunday Times University Guide' (September 2006), the University of Brighton has gone from strength to strength. It remains the only modern university to be named 'Sunday Times University of Year' (1999) and according to the guide, "the seven years since have arguably seen it get even better."
Brighton held its position as 56th in the University League Table. It also ranked number three amongst the Top Ten Modern Universities in the UK as well as receiving 11 ratings of excellence across its faculties.
The Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), which opened in 2003 in conjunction with the University of Sussex, received special mention for its high applicant numbers and tough entry criteria. While at the same time, the university was commended for its efforts in widening participation, boasting one of the UK's largest portfolios in foundation degrees (and still expanding).
Brighton leads the modern universities in having more academics involved in world-class research and received world-class ratings for research in 'European Studies', 'Art and Design', and 'Other Studies and Professions Allied to Medicine' (Biomedical Sciences). The opportunity for full-time undergraduates to gain work-related or work-based learning topped 90 per cent.
