University joins Eastbourne Business Crime Group

21.09.2006

The University of Brighton has recently joined the Eastbourne Business Crime Group. A part of the group's remit is to reduce crime and disorder in the town and offer support and advice to the businesses and customers of the town.

As the new academic year begins students will be arriving at the University of Brighton campus in Eastbourne this weekend. The university has over 2,000 students in the town who contribute much to the local community and economy. However, the university also recognises that young people living away from home for the first time can get into problems and that their lifestyles do not always sit easily alongside those of other residents in the town.

By joining the Eastbourne Business Crime Group the university is working in partnership with the local authority and police to tackle these problems before they emerge or escalate.

The university has already introduced 24-hour security at its student halls of residence in Eastbourne and we have members of staff who live on-site to deal with any issues immediately.

During Fresher's week the police will also be addressing new students that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. The university also supports the groups aim to promote responsible drinking in the town.

The university also supports the Students' Union's Sshh campaign (Silent Students: Happy Households) which will be launched in September and will give students practical advice about how they can be good neighbours.

Vice-Chancellor Julian Crampton said: "The University sees itself as key part of the community in Eastbourne."

"Whilst it is recognised that the university and its students and alumni who often settle in the town bring much to the local economy we also realise that some students will cause problems."

"Therefore we are very pleased to be working so closely with the police and the local authority to tackle anti-social behaviour in the town."
