Product Design student, Robert Nightingale and his Swedish design partner Ylva Soderstrom have won the highly coveted Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass Competition by 'revolutionising' the classic martini cocktail glass.
The winning glass called Revolut, takes the essentials of a martini cocktail glass, the base, stem, bowl and cocktail stick and reinvents this classic design into an innovative, modern and dynamic form with a subtle, classical influence.

Once the cocktail is poured into the glass, the centrifugal forces acting upon it causes the glass to gently revolve. This motion stirs the drink as it is poured, with the liquid flowing and eddying about the olive. The inward-curvature of the rim prevents the precious contents from escaping prematurely.
The Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass Competition is open to all design students. The competition which is run by the Bombay Sapphire Foundation was established in 2001 to recognise, encourage and reward the very best in contemporary design. Robert and Ylva will now travel to Milan in 2007 to compete in the global final of the competition. Robbie undertook an exchange programme organised by the university and is now studying for a masters degree in design on a scholarship from the Technology Institute of Lundt, Sweden.
