'Smashing Atoms' is the inaugural lecture from Professor Alison Bruce, Professor of Physics, School of Engineering. The lecture will take place at 6.30pm Thursday 9 November, Lecture theatre 1, University of Brighton, Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GJ.

Physicists have been studying the atomic nucleus for over 100 years and it could be argued that nuclear physics is old science. However, in another sense it is still new and exciting. On 9 November, Professor Alison Bruce will outline what is left to learn from the nucleus and what contribution such knowledge can make to society.

Professor Bruce will argue that in order to understand the make up of solid matter as well as liquids and gases on earth, in the Solar system and in stars then we need to understand nuclei. How is it that starting from the 'Big Bang' we arrive at a world made up of many elements including oxygen and carbon which are so important to people? Why is it that unstable nuclei can be used to help with medical diagnosis and sometimes therapy?

Professor Bruce will explore all these areas. She said: "This science is exciting and challenging with new ideas, new horizons and new applications beckoning on every side."
