Mithridates and Mozart - lessons in drug use?

Mithridates and Mozart: lessons in drug use?

Inaugural lecture from Graham Davies, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences.

6.30pm Thursday 30 November 2006

Lecture Theatre 1, University of Brighton, Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 4GJ

Mithridates (132BC-63BC) and Mozart (1756-1791) shared a similar experience; both suffered an adverse 'drug' effect whilst attempting to improve the quality of their lives.

Currently medicines represent the most common intervention made in healthcare but still contribute to patient morbidity and mortality.

This lecture will review the area of medication safety and focus on two very distinct approaches to improving the problems associated with drug use. The first highlights the research programme which has explored the removal of drugs in critically ill patients receiving renal dialysis. The lecture will then move on to describe an approach to measuring the competence of pharmacist, thereby, potentially, improving the quality of medicines use.
