Tickets are now on sale for the University of Brighton's most spectacular Christmas chemistry show to date: 'The Bigger Bang!'. Due to the huge popularity of the event, it will take place for the first time at the Brighton Dome on 13 December. The university has organised two performances at 1:30pm and 7pm for over 3,500 students, children and their families.
This year Dr Hal Sosabowski from the university will be joined by ITV's Ministry of Mayhem 'The Doc'. The experiments are also bigger and better with names like the Barking Dog, Liquid Oxygen Lava Lamp and the Exploding Ostrich Egg.
In 'Exploding Ostrich Egg', hydrogen gas is added to the egg and lit via a hole in the top, as the hydrogen burns off oxygen is added and this results in an ear splitting bang. Dr Sosabowski will also be showing you an interesting way of opening a tin of baked beans that Jamie Oliver probably hadn't thought of!
Beneath the breathtaking experiments lie two serious educational messages - chemistry is important in everyday life and is an interesting career choice. At a time of concern over the closure of chemistry departments in some universities, Dr Sosabowski engages the public in visual exhibition chemistry.
"This is a unique event with breathtaking experiments the likes of which you will never see anywhere else," commented Dr Sosabowski. "This is an almost guaranteed way of getting children and also adults turned off games consoles and on to science."
The event is a collaborative project between the University of Brighton, Sigma-Aldrich Co. Ltd and The Royal Society of Chemistry. This is a non-profit event with a small charge of £5 per ticket with discounts for families and groups. For booking and more information go to: www.setpointsussex.org.uk.
