Following three years of development work the University of Brighton, together with the University of Brighton Students' Union, have been awarded Fairtrade status. The award marks both the university's and the Students' Unions' continued commitment to expand the availability of Fairtrade products and in turn help disadvantaged growers to get a better deal.
In achieving this award the university has reached significant targets in a number of areas. These include ensuring coffee and sugar used by its hospitality services are from Fairtrade producers and promoting and selling Fairtrade chocolates and hot drinks in all outlets as well as supporting a Fairtrade Fortnight.
In the last academic year Catering Services sold over 240,000 cups of Fairtrade coffee and an estimated 50,000 cups of Fairtrade tea through its outlets. Brighton is the 50th university to earn this award and looks forward to maintaining it year-on-year.
However, the work does not stop here and the university's Catering Services will continue to promote the Fairtrade brand, expand the products available and encourage customers to choose Fairtrade wherever possible.
Head of Residential and Catering Services, Julie Barker said: "By buying Fairtrade products such as coffee, tea and chocolate our staff and students are helping farmers and other producers earn a decent living and provide good healthcare and education for their families."
Students' Union President, Becca Mann said: "The Students' Union set up a Fairtrade society four years ago and we are so pleased to support the university to earn this award. Students at Brighton study in a privileged environment which is perhaps why so many want to make a difference in poverty-stricken countries."
