Are we there yet? - inaugural lecture from Professor Yvonne Hillier

03.04.2007

Idiosyncrasy and serendipity on the road to knowledge

As we travel through life or learning is where we think we are going where we really end up? Are the diversions on the way as valuable as the destination itself?

Yvonne Hillier (pictured right), Professor of Education in the Education Research Centre at the university, will give an inaugural lecture on Tuesday 1 May to explore the concepts, raised by her ongoing research, which contribute to the mundane and the extraordinary faces of knowledge acquisition.

Using her lifetime's experience in the process of learning, Professor Hillier will guide the audience on an intellectual journey reflecting on behaviourist theories of B.F. Skinner, post-modernism, Karl Popper's philosophy of science, chaos theory, complexity, George Kelly's personal construct theory, and Deliberative Policy Analysis of Hajer and Wagenaar.

Professor Hillier is also the co-ordinator of the London and South East Region Learning and Skills Network and was a founder member of the national network and annual conference planning team. She published three books in 2006, one on FE policy, All you ever wanted to know about FE Policy, (Continuum, 2006), Adult Basic Skills - Changing Faces of Adult Literacy, Language and Numeracy: A Critical History with Mary Hamilton, (Trentham, 2006) and Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Language: policy, practice and research (edited with Mary Hamilton and Lyn Tett) (Open University Press - McGraw Hill, 2006).

A challenging and entertaining excursion through the breadth of educational theory, this lecture will re-examine the old question: "Is it truly better to journey than to arrive?".
