Answers to everyday common design problems will be unveiled by students from the University of Brighton at this year's new designer's show on Friday 1 June. Showcasing designs that aim to improve, challenge or reinvent a multitude of objects which surround us day-to-day, visitors can expect to see everything from compact balcony furniture for urban dwellers (see design by Alex House pictured below) to finger chopsticks for the less dab handed!
Encapsulating the very best from design technology, sports design technology and product design students, 39 talented designers will showcase a collection of exciting and truly original work to the industry, the public and the media. A range of cutting-edge products will be exhibited from the university's emerging talents including Karlee Samuels and Gemma Bennett.
Karlee Samuels worked in collaboration with the company Tukshop to incorporate new safety elements to the Asian three-wheeled Tuk-Tuk taxi vehicle which launched in Brighton in 2006. Karlee developed a hard top roof and secure passenger doors to increase the safety of the vehicle whilst keeping the traditional look. By redesigning the passenger seat Karlee's invention also allows the seat to be converted into a parcel shelf for business deliveries.
Gemma, who won an award from the Mathmos lighting company in London for her lighting design, has designed 'The Egg'. Inspired to create a light that is comforting in a home environment, Gemma's handheld light is portable and rechargeable, allowing the user to walk around with the light.
Course Leader Richard Morris said: "This is a chance for the public and industry to see the next generation of designers. It is an exhibition of truly fresh creative talent, delivering an event brimming with innovation."
The event is held at the university's design and technology suite, a new 'creativity zone' designed to give students and tutors opportunities to unleash and explore their ideas in state-of-the-art surrounding located in Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road.
The students will also be displaying their products again at the national New Designers exhibition at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London, from 12 - 15 July. Visit www.newdesigners.com for further information and tickets.
