International design archive to be housed at university

31.05.2007

A major international design archive is to be relocated to the University of Brighton's design archive. The extensive and significant archives of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) will be formally handed over to the university on 2 June by President of ICSID, Professor Peter Zec.

ICSID now has 165 member organisations in more than 50 countries, representing approximately 150,000 designers from educational institutions, promotional and professional organizations. This ceremony forms part of ICSID's 50th anniversary year-long calendar of events.

The university's design archive is the foremost of its kind in the UK, and also holds the archives of the Design Council and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA). Archives play an important role in the research infrastructure of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture & Architecture and do much to enhance the public profile of the university in local and international contexts.

Jonathan Woodham, Professor of Design History at the university and director for the Centre for Research & Development said: "With the addition of the ICSID archive, the university's design archives now comprise 15 collections that enhance understanding of the designed environment, the design profession and design practice. They form a research base with a curatorial team that supports the works of scholars and students from many academic disciplines; locally, nationally and internationally."

Notes for editors

A seminar will take place prior to the formal handing over ceremony with presentations from Professor Zec, Professor Victor Margolin (University of Chicago at Illinois) and Professor Jonathan Woodham (University of Brighton) about the international importance of ICSID as a global organization.
