Royal geographical medal scooped

06.07.2007

Dr Kath Browne (pictured below) from the School of the Environment, has been awarded the coveted Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society. This highly prestigious award encourages geographical research in young researchers who have shown great potential.

Dr Kath Brown with her Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical SocietyDr Browne's research on the geographies of sexualities has been hailed as highly original. Dr Rita Gardner, Director of the Royal Geographical Society commented: "The society is granting this medal in recognition of the contribution Dr Browne has made in her field and for her work which has pushed the boundaries of geographical science."

Dr Browne's work looks at the geographies of sexualities and genders, focusing on lesbian geographies and considering the discriminations experienced by women who are mistaken for men. Her recent work links policy and theory by exploring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender need in Brighton & Hove.

This practical research, which was funded by Brighton and Sussex Community Knowledge Exchange (BSCKE), Brighton and Hove City Primary Care Trust and Brighton & Hove City Council will ensure that vulnerable and marginalised groups are not ignored and can access local services.

Her international reputation is continually increasing with the publication of Geographies of Sexualities: Theory, practices and Politics in July 2007, which she co-edited. She has written 20 publications across a range of disciplines and is a trustee of Pride in Brighton and Hove.
