Broadcasting in Hastings

31.08.2007

Broadcast Media students at the university certainly made an impression on the head of BBC News, Helen Boaden, following her visit to the University Centre Hastings (UCH), when they received a personal invitation to visit the BBC Radio studios in London.

Two groups attended on two consecutive days earlier in the year to be given 'access all areas', meeting the likes of Chris Moyles and Edith Bowman. They were then given exclusive permission to witness the preparation and subsequent broadcast of the daily lunchtime news programme; Newsbeat, from inside the newsroom itself, presented by Georgina Bowman.

live bbc radio broadcastAccording to Martin Close, one of the students: "It was a fantastic opportunity going up to see Radio 1 Newsbeat happening live and getting a glimpse into the workings of Radio 1. We got a real feel for how a radio news programme is put together and the energy and professionalism that goes into it, something that we hope to try and emulate when we start broadcasting our student radio station!"

The students have now returned from the trip eager to begin the process of setting up and managing a University of Brighton student radio station at UCH, putting into practice the radio production skills that they have developed as part of the broadcast media foundation degree course.

Staff and students of the course were also involved in the filming of a commercial broadcast several times on ITV3 for visit1066country.com. Two members of staff and three students formed the majority of the seven-member crew, which filmed at several locations within the East Sussex area. The voice of Steve Furst, star of Little Britain and the Orange cinema advertisement campaign, recorded the voice-over for the commercial in the sound studio at UCH.

You can view the commercial online from the visit1066country website.

Course leader for the FdA Broadcast Media, Sarah Atkinson, said: "These recent developments capture the unique nature of this new course, which is one of a constant engagement with media professionals, providing students with real-world working situations and experiences in preparation for a professional career in the media industry."
