New technologies for cleaning up contaminated land and waters in former Eastern Europe will be discussed this week at a conference organised and co-chaired by the university's Professor Andy Cundy and Dr Phill Teasdale.
The conference, funded by the ENVIRON foundation and supported by the Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health, will take place in Bratislava, Slovakia from 9 to 10 October. Bringing together international academics, members of government and industry representatives, the conference will examine the contaminated land legacy in the V4 states; Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, and Hungary.
Many of the former industrial and military sites in these countries are highly contaminated and urgent action is needed to prevent the degradation of the surrounding environment and contamination of water supplies. The conference will focus on the impact of recent European legislation on contaminated land management in the V4 countries; the potential health impacts of contaminated land and how these can be managed; and the latest methods of cleaning-up contaminated land and waters.
A key feature of the conference will be encouraging dialogue and sharing of ideas between the four V4 nations. Professor Andy Cundy said: "Contaminated land and its management is a major issue in the V4 nations. This conference will provide an opportunity for scientists and practitioners to share their expertise and discuss new developments, and inform more effective contaminated land legislation and management."
