Head of Chelsea School to lead national body for sport

10.10.2007

Head of Chelsea School, Professor Jo Doust, has been elected to lead the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES). The organisation is the key academic and professional body for sport and exercise science in the UK.

In a three-way competition, Professor Doust (pictured right) was successfully elected by members of the association this September. He joins the executive committee this year as chair (elect) and is then chair for the following two years.

Professor Doust, who was elected a fellow of the association in 2000, said: "I am deeply honoured to be elected to chair BASES. The Chelsea School established one of the first sports science degrees in the 1980s. Past and present staff have contributed significantly to scientific research and its application to sport and physical activity ever since. I am excited to be able to continue this Brighton tradition."

"The next few years are exciting and challenging times for BASES. Preparations for the 2012 Olympics place elite sport at the forefront of many people's minds. At the exercise end of the spectrum there is increasing recognition of the importance of a physically active lifestyle."

"This continues to become embedded with bodies such as the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) producing public health policy recommendations. As the professional body leading excellence in sport and exercise sciences through evidence-based practice, BASES expects to make a major contribution."
