Local MP, Nigel Waterson (pictured below), met with podiatrists and had his feet examined at the University of Brighton's dedicated Clinical Podiatry Unit, based at the Leaf Hospital, Eastbourne.
He visited the unit's clinics and laboratories which enable staff and students to provide both an excellent education and comprehensive foot health service. The MP had a chance to meet staff, students and patients to find out more about this important and hugely popular service.
Podiatry and chiropody keep people mobile for longer, ensure everyone can take part in sport and exercise and helps prevent a range of illnesses from depression to heart disease.
Head of the Division of Podiatry at the university, Janet McInnes said: "Investing in podiatry services will help to prevent illness, to reduce health inequalities and to promote healthy and active life at all ages."
"Podiatrists can often keep people walking, for example, when suffering rheumatoid arthritis or vascular impairment. This reduces costly hospital visits, surgical intervention and saves GP time."
Nigel Waterson said: "I've been incredibly impressed at the range of issues that come into podiatry and how hi-tech some of this work is. This is a centre for excellence in the south-east and the country."
