100 students receive scholarships

12.11.2007

Students have been awarded scholarship prizes for academic excellence. The university issued the £1,000 rewards for the first time at an event which took place at the Sallis Benney Theatre. A hundred students had excelled in subjects as diverse as pharmacy, architecture and criminology. The awards were presented by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julian Crampton and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors, June Crown.

Professor Crampton commented: "These awards recognise the success of our students as well as the support that they have received from our staff. Amongst the high-achievers are those who have overcome adversity and turned their lives round through higher education."

One of this year's award winners is editorial photography student, Melanie Clark, 36. After years working in low paid jobs in Brighton, Melanie decided it was time to pursue a personal dream. Currently in her second year, the course is fulfilling all her expectations.

"I've always had cameras but never took photography seriously until I developed my first film in a darkroom...then I was hooked! Being a mature student is great with so many opportunities that I can appreciate much more now. I'm hoping to be an art photographer when I graduate. I'm really excited to win this award, it's so encouraging. Now I can buy a decent computer."

She will be joined by second year student Nathalie Sullivan, 28, from Crawley who is studying biological sciences. Nathalie discovered her passion for science whilst working as a teaching assistant in the science department at a local school.

As well as dealing with the demands of full-time study, Nathalie is also a single mother to her nine-year-old son. She said that receiving a scholarship has really boosted her confidence.

"It was a really nice surprise to receive the award. The first year was especially tough as my son fell ill with appendicitis and peritonitis and at one point it was touch and go if I could continue at university. This award has inspired me to carry on with my studies and the money will really help."

"I'm really enjoying my studies and coming to the University of Brighton has really been a life-changing experience for me. When I graduate I'm looking forward to either working as a teacher or continuing with research."
