Students leave their mark in national survey

National student survey

The National Student Survey (NSS) is due to be launched at the university for the fourth year running on Monday 7 January 2008. Targeted at all final year undergraduates, the survey gives our students the opportunity to feedback on their academic experience.

The survey is conducted by Ipsos MORI, an independent market research agency with the full support of the National Union of Students (NUS). All final year students will receive an email from Ipsos MORI in the second week of January inviting them to complete the survey online.

Through the online questionnaire, students will be asked to provide feedback on the following topics:

  • quality of teaching
  • assessment and feedback
  • academic support
  • organisation and management
  • learning resources
  • personal development
  • overall satisfaction.
The results of last year’s survey are available on the Unistats website which is designed to help future students in their decision-making process in choosing what courses and/or institutions they wish to attend.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Stuart Laing, said: “The active participation of our students in providing feedback on their experiences is essential in helping us improve and update our courses. The results will also assist prospective students in making well-informed decisions about their course choices.”

The NSS has been commissioned by the higher education funding bodies for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and covers all the HE institutions they fund. It is part of the revised system of quality assurance for higher education, which has replaced subject review by the QAA. The NSS is designed to run alongside the QAA institutional audit, to generate more detailed public information about teaching quality.
