From Alma-Ata to Bangkok: international perspectives on health promotion
Published: 28.03.08
John Davies, Professor of International Health Promotion at the university will give an inaugural lecture on Wednesday 9 April where he will trace and reflect on his 30 year involvement in the development of health promotion. He will discuss how health promotion has led to a major shift in the concept of health and how it has become overtly or covertly a major influence on health policy internationally.
Drawing on concepts mainly from social and behavioural science, John will explain that through its multi-disciplinary nature, health promotion has expanded health from the bio-physical into the socio-political arena. This has led to a genuinely different perspective to improve the health of populations.
Using examples from his experiences of working with international government and non-government organisations in many countries, John will argue that health promotion highlights the moral value of health. It has become a new form of global politics and provides a sustainable means to tackle the determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities; thereby achieving health for all.
John has worked as an academic and practitioner in health promotion and public health at local, regional, national and international levels. He has also held major professional roles at the International Union for Health Promotion and Education.
