Lord John MoggThe university is delighted at the news that Sir John Mogg (pictured right), the chairman of the university's Board of Governors, has been appointed to the House of Lords. His appointment, as a non-party-political peer, recommended by the House of Lords Appointments Commission, was announced today.

Lord Mogg joined the university's Board of Governors in October 2005 and succeeded Sir Michael Checkland as chairman in August 2006. As chairman, Lord Mogg has sustained Brighton's strong commitment to effective governance and has guided the refinement of the role and values of a successful modern university.

In addition to his engagement with higher education, Lord Mogg is non-executive chairman of OFGEM, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, and the elected chairman of the EU Energy Regulators.

Lord Mogg's distinguished career in the Civil Service focussed on industry and European matters. He then served for 13 years in the European Commission which culminated in his position as EU director general for the Internal Market and Financial Services.

The university is proud of its association with Lord Mogg and very pleased that the Lords will have the benefit of his wise counsel on higher education as well as the international energy market.
