Further student guidance on financial delays
Published 15 December 2009
We recognise that many of you are still waiting to receive any funding from Student Finance England. As you are by now aware there is a national problem with the processing of applications and there is a large backlog of evidence waiting to be considered.
The following list offers suggestions of action that you can take during the vacation period whilst you are waiting to hear about the outcome of your application.
- Keep phoning Student Finance England 0845 300 50 90. This is better than checking progress online. You can call for free from Student Advice Service offices. You need your customer reference number and secret answer to do this. Always take the name of the person you speak to every time and keep a record of the conversation. If they ask for additional evidence, make sure you understand exactly what it is they want.
- If not done so already, open a student bank account. This can give you access to an interest free overdraft as negotiated with the bank.
- If you already have a student bank account, ask the lender if you can extend your overdraft limit. They may need some evidence that you are still awaiting funds.
- Wherever possible ask family/guardians/friends if they are able to help you temporarily.
- Seek a part time job during term time or full time work over the vacation. Look on the Careers website or research opportunities at home for Christmas opportunities.
- If you are in arrears with rent payments and you are either in Halls or in University managed Accommodation you need to contact Finance department 01273 642592 to discuss suspension of direct debit payments.
- If you are living in the private rented sector, you need to tell your Landlord/Landlady/Letting Agent if you are unable to make rent payments. Many landlords in the local area are aware of the national crisis and will be receptive if you maintain communication with them. The Student Advice Service will be able to give you a written statement confirming your circumstances if needed. If you can make any payment it will support your case.
- If you have been sent an invoice for fees, you should negotiate payment with Finance department by telephone on 01273 642959.
- If you applied on time (June 2009) and are still waiting for funds, you may be eligible for a Bridging Loan. Please contact Student Advice Service on 01273 642888 for full criteria.
- The Student Advice Service is open at Tithe Barn, Moulsecoomb up until 24 December 2009. Our drop in is open between 10-1 Monday to Friday during the vacation, or you can telephone 01273 642888 or email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk.
