Help for Haiti
Published 27 January 2010
Staff and students have responded to the Haiti earthquake disaster by organising a host of fund-raising activities.
Many will be held on Friday this week in response to a call by The Argus newspaper to support Unicef's relief efforts.
The death toll in Haiti is expected to exceed 150,000 – more than every man, woman and child living in Brighton – and an estimated 1.5 million people are homeless.
Rebecca Haroutunian, the university's communications manager, said: "Everyone can help by spreading the word and supporting the various activities planned."
The following are events we have been informed of:
Lizzie Lee (School of Architecture and Design) says: "I'm going to run some 'Sock Alien' workshops at Grand Parade in the foyer outside the theatre from 12.20pm to 4pm on Friday. I'll charge £3 per alien with all the materials included. I've got a lot of volunteered help from 3D students." Sock Aliens pictured right.
Rebecca Wells (Centre for Learning and Teaching) says: “I'm no good at baking but I will do some shaking – of a collection tin of course. A colleague and I will be going round Falmer on Friday collecting.”
Orly Klein (School of Applied Social Science) says: “Some friends and I have organised a benefit gig for Thursday 18 February where every penny is going to the Disasters Emergency Committee Haiti appeal. The gig is at Concorde2 on Maderia Drive, Brighton, and there will be live music from the likes of Manouchska and The Fat 45's.”
Katie Warrener (Registry) says: "The student office at the Cockcroft building, Lewes Road, Brighton, will be holding a cake sale running from Thursday to Friday. Volunteer cooks will be bringing in banana bread, carrot cake, chocolate cake, profiteroles, chocolate chip cookies and cheese muffins."
Sarah Flax (School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences) says: "The administration team at PABS (Cockcroft building) will be holding a cake sale on Friday for the appeal."
Rebecca Haroutunian (Marketing and Communications) says: "All hands to the mixing bowl! We're holding a cake sale in Marketing and Communications, Room 230 at Mithras in Lewes Road, Brighton on Friday. Treats will include some gluten-free delights."
Naz Harrison (president of the Students' Union) says : "We have booked Cockcroft Hall in Cockcroft on Friday 19 February for a music and food night and especially to raise funds for this vitally important cause."
