Travel industry backs university degree

Published 1 March 2010

Brighton has become the first university in the UK to have a degree course endorsed by a major sector of the travel industry.

The university signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Travel and Meetings (ITM), the UK business travel and meetings association, on 26 February to formalise the endorsement of its BA(Hons) in International Travel Management.

The programme links graduates with business and industry and no other university in the UK offers a travel-specific course like it at undergraduate level.

The university is forging closer links with ITM and is organising internships for students and allowing them access to up-to-date industry data for module development.

ITM represents nearly 1,000 members and buyers with travel and meetings expenditure worth £34 billion a year. The memorandum is the first step towards developing educational programmes through ITM's Academy and could lead to the development of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership to develop the programme further.

Future plans include linking professional development qualifications run by the association at degree and masters levels with the university's degree course.

A university spokeswoman said: "Any programme developed with ITM would benefit from strong industry support and would provide up-to-date industry data and expertise, and a large source of potential students."
