The people’s choice

Published 11 June 2010

Photographs and narrative telling the story of woman’s quest to find a husband won the top award at the University of Brighton’s Burt, Brill and Cardens Graduate Show.

More than 15,000 visitors to the university’s galleries in Grand Parade voted on their favourite exhibit during the week-long show.

The award was presented (last night, Thursday) to Kayla Stoate, Photography BA(Hons) student, who said: “I’m amazed and thrilled. I really didn’t expect it.”

On her work, she said: “I really like writing and wanted to create a fusion of narrative and photography to tell the story of a woman falling in love and her journey from there.”

The award was presented by Andrew Kay, reviewer with Latest 7 which supported the award, and David Edwards, managing partner with Burt, Brill and Cardens, Brighton-based solicitors and the show sponsors.

Mr Edwards said: “Tutors thought Kayla’s work was really good too so it shows the public is a pretty good judge.” Transformed into the biggest art gallery in the south east of the UK, the Faculty of Arts played host to work from a range of 25 courses from fashion and 3D Design to photography.
